Where Does Our Wood Come From?

Every Fredrix product begins with only the finest natural materials sourced from environmentally responsible companies. One of the most prolific on our list of allies in keeping with this mission is Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI). Incorporated in 1951, SPI is the largest lumber company in California. It houses one of the largest sustainable forests in the U.S. and the largest in the State of California.

Based in Anderson, California—approximately 10 miles south of Redding, SPI owns and manages 1.9 million acres of timberland in California and Washington. This third-generation, family-owned company states that it is “committed to managing its lands in a responsible and sustainable manner to protect the environment, while providing quality wood products and renewable power for consumers.” The company is also a certified participant in the independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and it is always developing new and improved methods to help support the forest.

For example, each year SPI plants up to six million new trees including multiple native species such as Douglas Fir, White Fir, Hemlock, Ponderosa Pine, Sugar Pine and Incense Cedar. This helps “maintain biological diversity.” According to SPI, “seedlings are grown from seed sources found close to each harvested area, which assures that they will be conditioned to the environment where they originated.”

By utilizing technologically advanced state-of-the art equipment as well, SPI also has the means to effectively monitor forest conditions and minimize its impact on the environment.

This combined passion for sustainability, technology and adherence to consumer standards is one of the many things that attract companies such as Fredrix Canvas. Our stretcher bars, for example, feature high quality, SPI lumber that resists warping and cracking. Pleasing to the eye, Fredrix stretcher bars (aka stretcher strips) also feature a tongue-and-groove design that’s perfect for holding your custom canvas together.
